Don't let your dental benefits go to waste!

At Thousand Oaks Smile Design we appreciate active lifestyles and how good dental health contributes to the efficiency of your days. We also know it’s easy to skip past planned treatment or periodic preventive visits, even with the best intentions. While we’ll always be here to help you with dental emergencies, we want to help you enjoy the benefits of exceptional dental health. So if you’re overdue by a month or a year or more, give us a call. We’ll work with you to find a treatment schedule that works and keeps your life on track!

A Lifetime Investment
Preventive dentistry may be the best health investment available, paying immeasurable dividends far into the future. Since most dental problems develop relatively slowly, regular check-ups with professional cleanings provide a stellar return. Avoiding even a single advanced cavity can save large amounts of time, discomfort and money. And the silent destruction of gum disease can be even more life-altering. To top it off, ongoing research continues to uncover links between oral disease and serious health conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, and even certain cancers.
Don't forget about yourself
As the days of another year race forward, we are all aware that time isn’t slowing down. The demands of modern life push and pull on us from every angle. Deadlines at work and headlines at home write the story of our lives. The never-ending list of responsibilities and activities jostle for attention from a limited number of hours in the day. If we’re lucky, we carve out little blocks of time for ourselves.

Six Dietary Tips for Good Oral Health

Dr. Elbert encourages his patients to follow healthy oral hygiene and diet habits.

Here are some healthy tips for you to follow:

  • Wait at least 30 minutes after eating or drinking anything before brushing as the enamel will be softened and you could be brushing away tiny particles.
  • Eat a varied diet that is rich in vitamins, minerals.
  • Fresh fruit and veggies can help prevent gum disease.
  • Finishing a meal with a cube of cheese is a great way to reduce the effect of acids from the foods damaging your teeth.
  • Avoid snacking on sugary foods and drinks.
  • Chew gum with xylitol as it can actively contribute to your oral health.

Lastly, we cannot underestimate the importance of visiting your dentist regularly.

Going Camping? Don't Forget The Bottle Opener!

TOSD #TipTuesday !

Going camping? Did you forget the bottle opener? Don't even think about using your teeth! You would be surprised how many people do. This can chip and damage your teeth, leading to an unsightly smile and possible cavities depending on the amount of damage. Remember, we have come a long way since caveman days. We have sophisticated tools and they do not include your teeth. Schedule your appointment with Thousand Oaks Smile Design today!

The Importance of Oral Health

Regular dentist visits can do more than keep your smile attractive – they can also tell dentists information about your overall health, including whether or not you may be at risk for chronic disease.

Research suggests, that the health of your mouth mirrors the condition of your body as a whole. For example, when your mouth is healthy, chances are your overall health is good, too. On the other hand, if you have poor oral health, you may have other health problems.

According to the Academy of General Dentistry, there is a relationship between gum (periodontal) disease and health complications such as a stroke and heart disease. Women with gum disease also show higher incidences of pre-term, low birth-weight babies.

Other research shows that more than 90% of all systemic diseases (diseases involving many organs or the whole body) have oral manifestations, including swollen gums, mouth ulcers, dry mouth and excessive gum problems. Such diseases include:
  • Diabetes
  • Leukemia
  • Pancreatic Cancer
  • Oral Cancer
  • Kidney Disease
  • Heart Disease

Since most people have regular oral examinations, their dentist may be the first health care provider to diagnose a health problem in its early stages.  Research also shows that good oral health may actually prevent certain diseases from occurring.  Schedule your appointment with Thousand Oaks Smile Design because your health is important!
